What is Safe Bars?
Safe Bars uses innovative bystander education and self-defense strategies to empower DC-area bar staff to stand up against sexual harassment and assault. We train staff at bars, clubs, and restaurants to recognize and respond to sexual harassment and assault among staff and patrons.
Bystander intervention programs have been proven effective in making nightlife spaces safer and more welcoming.
Safe Bars can train you to lead a successful program where you are!
What does the training involve?
We’ll equip you with the tools to start a bystander intervention training program for bar and restaurant staffs where you live. It’s totally customizable based on your community and in fact, we encourage that!
We come to you for the training. The length depends on your group size, but generally it takes 12 hours — two six-hour days.
We consult with you before and after the training on what program design might work best for you.
The in-person training element is focused on curriculum content and delivery.
And we provide you with a resource packet full of research and analysis, so you can tailor that to your needs that as well.

“Everyone at Hank’s knows that they’re part of a community where they do the important work of caring for our guests. The Safe Bars training helped show us how this work influences our community writ large here in the DC area. Safe Bars is starting important conversations on how we can work together to make our communities — small and large — safe and welcoming for people of all backgrounds and identities.”
